Here are a few milestones of Leave No Trace History

  • 1987

    A “no trace” program is in place for wilderness and backcountry trips.

  • 1990 – 91

    The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) was asked to develop hands-on, science-based training to educate audiences to minimize their impacts

  • 1993

    A summit on outdoor recreation in Washington DC leads to the creation of the independent organization “Leave No Trace”.

  • 1994

    Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics is incorporated.

  • 2004

    A small group of Canadian Leave No Trace Master Instructors meet to discuss the presence of Leave No Trace in Canada. This group, charged with the momentum of creating a Canadian branch, formed the Leave No Trace Canada Steering Committee.

  • 2005

    A national support campaign was launched and resulted in a huge community push for the development of a Canadian branch of the organization. More than 50 letters of support were sent, and the founding organizations of Leave No Trace mobilized to see the project through. Mountain Equipment Company (MEC), Parks Canada, CPAWS, Aventure Écotourisme Québec, Vert l’action, Saskatchewan Parks and Ambassador Outdoor Education.

  • 2006

    In March 2006, the Steering Committee began its final transition to the Board of Directors of Leave No Trace Canada. Leave No Trace officially opens in October 2006.

  • 2007

    Leave No Trace Canada received charitable status in November 2007.

  • 2008

    Leave No Trace is established in Ireland.

The Seven No Trace Principles provide a framework of impact reduction practices and techniques available to anyone who spends time in the outdoors.
